Sunday 09/12/2010 :: Presse release

Seven persons were injured last night in Kosovska Mitrovica, in riots that broke out after the end of the semi-finals basketball match between Serbia and Turkey in Istanbul. Doctors in the Mitrovica hospital said five Serb boys had been injured and that the most serious injuries were sustained by Miloš Radenković, who has a firearm bullet wound in the left arm region. A regional spokesperson of the Kosovo Police Service, Besim Hoti, said that a EULEX police member was also among the injured and that he had been shot in the leg on the bridge over the river Ibar. The riots occurred when Kosovo Albanians, celebrating the victory of Turkey in the basketball match, went across the river Ibar to clash with Serbs, who were watching the match in cafes in the vicinity. Stones were thrown and soon sirens were heard in the town, but also shots and rifles from firearms. A little later, the EULEX police appeared and used teargas to disperse Serbs, who were on  the northern side of the bridge. The situation in Kosovska Mitrovica is peaceful now and the main town bridge has been reopened for traffic and pedestrians.
